Ten Ways to Save Money on Dates

Let's face it, dating can be expensive. Whether you're single and dating or married going on a date night, the cost can really add up. According to Match.com, the leader in online matchmaking, the average romantic dinner date can cost anywhere between $50-%100. A romantic evening of dinner, theater tickets, and flowers costs $314 on average! With dating prices this high, we've compiled a few tips to help lower the cost while retaining the romance!
  1. Cook dinner together at home and then go out for dessert! Not only is this incredibly romantic, but you'll save a bundle. The two of you can rub arms in the kitchen preparing the meal and then light the sparks over a candlelit dinner. Cap the evening off with a decadent dessert at a local restaurant.

  2. Get season tickets to a local sports team or the theater. Whether you enjoy grabbing your glove and heading out to a game or dressing to the nines and heading out to a play, buying season tickets is a must for the budget-conscious. With season tickets, you're able to enjoy numerous dates together for much cheaper by purchasing them all at once.

  3. Wait until the last minute. For some events, such as theater, tickets will sometimes be priced lower on the day of the event in order to sell more. If you don't mind the uncertainty, this can be a great way to a great date at a very low cost.
  4. Check out your local theater. Many communities have local theater (or maybe a high school drama theater) that are actually quite good! Make a commitment to check it out on your next date. You'll most likely find that you really enjoyed yourselves, while saving a bundle.

  5. Visit local botanical centers, gardens, and museums. These types of places are generally inexpensive, very interesting, and can be quite romantic. Just picture yourself and your sweetie walking close together through beautiful gardens.

  6. Pick some fruit. Visit a strawberry patch, pumpkin patch, apple orchard, or whatever is in season. It's generally free to visit with the only cost being the fruit that you pick. Once you're done picking, feed pieces of fruit to each other seductively.

  7. Buy an entertainment book! The coupons contained in these books are more than worth the small price you pay for them. You can get buy 1, get 1 free meals, movies, and tons of other date-worthy activities.

  8. Picnic in the Park. This is a common suggestion, but not many couples actually take advantage of it! Pack a picnic lunch, complete with a bottle of wine and a book of romantic poetry. Head out to your local park, snag a shady spot under a tree and prepare yourself for an afternoon of romance. After eating, read to each other from the poetry book. While it may sound cheesy at first, you'll really feel the romantic sparks.

  9. Spend the night on the couch. There is nothing like spending the entire night together on the couch. Grab a cozy blanket big enough for two, rent a collection of movies, and snuggle together. Get rid of all distractions including telephones, and/or friends and kids. The best gift that you can give each other is the gift of time and a night together on the couch where the only thing you focus on is each other is the perfect gift to yourselves.

  10. Check for discounts online. Lastly, before you head out on any date, check the company or event website. Often times they will have coupons that you can print out for a discount. If you're getting tickets to an event or travel, check several online websites for the best deal.

Now that you have a few ideas, money can no longer be an excuse for lack of romance. :-)

10 money-saving grocery shopping tips

1 Do your homework. Planning before you head off to the supermarket will help you shop more economically. Plan your menu for the week, then make a checklist of what’s lacking in your pantry. Keep a pad and pen so you can be ready to list the things you need. Cut and clip coupons. Prepare a shopping list. Read the newspapers for upcoming sales and make the most of them. Try to buy the items you will need until your next trip to the grocery, if weekly, then plan 7 days ahead and be prepared.

2. Choosing the right store. For basic grocery needs many grocery stores now offer excellent product and price selection, and frequent shoppers programs. For bulk buying, warehouse clubs or superstores are your best option. Non-perishable items are often at unbeatable prices at these types of stores. For the best prices on health and beauty products, check drugstore chains like Watson’s or Mercury and superstores.

3. Shop early. Try to get out early on your grocery shopping day and get there before the crowds come. Meat is usually put out early in the morning, this holds true too for produce. You can get there and buy before having to stand in lines and also before the meat and produce have been picked over.

4. Eat first. Grocery stores know the power of the sweet smell of freshly baked bread. Just one sniff will ignite the appetite and send even the most hardened shopper down the aisle grabbing for anything that looks good. Remember, everything looks good when our stomachs are screaming, “feed me!”

5. Shop the outside aisles. Supermarkets are designed with the four basic food groups on and around the perimeter. If you stick to the outside aisles, you’ll find produce, bakery, dairy and meat-the most natural, unprocessed foods which are best for your health. Avoid going up and down the aisles where processed “convenience” foods dwell to tempt you away from healthy foods.

6. Set limits on impulse buying. Avoid spontaneous shopping trips—this is one of the best deterrents to impulse buying. A well thought-out shopping list that you stick to will help cut-down on grabbing for things that you do not need. In addition, giving yourself enough time to shop will help prevent dashing in and reaching for the first item that you come to. Setting a limit for impulse buying will help soothe the craving without busting the budget.

7. Compare prices. To determine the true value of a product, read the unit price, not just package price. The unit price information is usually on a sticker located on the shelf that holds the item. The package price only tells you the cost of the entire item. The unit price shows the cost per pound, ounce, etc. Taking a moment to compare this information in similar products will help you get the best value for your dollar. Also, be certain to check “expiration” and “use by” dates for the freshest products.

8. Beware of marketing gimmicks. Avoid marketing ploys designed to draw your attention to a particular product. Knowing some of the tricks of the trade will ultimately save you money. Beware of end-of-the-aisle dump bins, island displays, recipe related item placement, and “middle-shelf” items. This is typically, where higher priced and impulse products are placed.

9. Learn to read labels. Reading the product label is the best way to find out more then what is advertised on the box. Ingredients are listed by quantity actually used when making the product. The ingredients used the most are listed first. If you are looking to cut fat from your diet, don’t be fooled by watchwords such as lite or fat-free which have a broad usage allowance. By reading the label, you can get a better idea of what the fat to calorie ratio is as well as other valuable nutritional information.

10. Watch the scanner. Keep your eyes glued to the scanner to allow you to stop the checkout process if an item is showing the incorrect price.

how to save money on clothing

Reduce clothing expenses by always buying classic -- Clothing fads come and go so quickly that last year's poodle skirt will bring snickers and giggles if you dare to wear it this season. This means that $150 you paid for it was a real waste of money. Avoid buying faddish clothing that will quickly go out of style. Instead, buy only good quality classic clothing that you can wear five years from now if you haven't worn it out by then.

Reduce clothing costs by buying mix and match pieces -- Buy clothing items that you can wear with what you already own. You can get more looks with fewer pieces. Whenever possible, buy clothing that can be worn year round.

Reduce clothing costs by avoiding dry cleaning whenever possible -- Dry cleaning is very expensive and therefore should be avoided whenever possible. Although many clothing labels recommend dry cleaning, about 25% of the time, the item can be laundered in your machine at home or by hand. Ask your dry cleaner.

Reduce clothing costs by buying at the end of the season -- Clothing stores significantly mark down clothing to make room for their Spring or Winter merchandise. The coat that originally sold for $260 in November will be marked down to $80 by the following March. Therefore, Spring is the time to get a good deal on a winter coat; Fall is the time to get a good deal on a pair of shorts. You can cut hundreds from your family's annual clothing budget by shopping this way.

Avoid the mall and try to buy from a wholesaler -- Retail space at your local mall comes at a premium price for the retailer, who passes the cost on to consumers. This is why clothing costs three times as much at the mall as it does from a wholesaler. Buy clothing at discount outlets or from wholesale catalogs and you can reduce your clothing budget by about two-thirds. Shop for clothing at the mall only when they've drastically reduced out-of-season merchandise.

Sell clothing you don't want at Consignment Shops -- Although most second-hand clothing is just that -- second hand, you can find some good bargains at consignment shops. Sometimes you can find good quality designer outfits that still have the original price tag on them or were hardly worn. These items were likely purchased by wealthy women who were shopaholics and needed to make room for new purchases. A consignment shop is also a good way to get rid of clothing you don't want any longer, but is still in good condition. You split the profit with the shop owner.

Open a store credit card -- Department stores and other retailers usually send discount coupons to those who have a store credit card. Keep in mind that department store credit cards usually come with a very high interest rate -- 18% to 28% -- so you don't want to actually use them to make purchases unless you pay the balance in full each month. Also, keep in mind that opening new credit accounts can lower your FICO credit score, which could result in higher insurance premiums and higher interest rates when obtaining financing.

Save Money when buying food

Food.

Not only do you need to eat food to live, the expense of it for the average family can eat you alive! Since food is a necessary and recurring expense, just saving, for example, $20 a week on your purchases can convert to over $1000 in savings over the course of a year.

Try to plan in advance. By knowing what you need, you will be able to buy in larger quantities (almost always less expensive) and cut down on convenience food purchases (always more expensive).

If you use national brands, spend a little time clipping and using coupons. $1.50 invested in the Sunday newspaper could save you $20 or more at the checkout. Organize the coupons by type, so as you develop a shopping list you can make a notation if you have a coupon.

Consider store brands or generics. You may find the quality is equal to (and sometimes better than) the national brands, and store brands/generics are generally considerably less expensive.

When it is on sale, stock up. Of course this only applies to those items that you use on a regular basis. Stocking up on an item which you use once a year doesn't make sense (and robs you of spending money, not to mention shelf space).

Shop at the store that is the cheapest overall. Surveys have shown that there is sometimes as much as 10-15% difference on identical grocery orders at 2 different stores in the same area. If you spend $500 a month on groceries, that can equate to $600 to $900 a year in savings. Don't throw away your money just because it is your habit to shop at a certain store.

Tips on Saving Money
Going hand and hand with an effective household budget is saving money on those things that you truly need. To start saving, take an inventory of your needs to see where you can shave the dollars. Begin with the biggest items first, where the most potential for savings is, and move down the scale to the less expensive items. A moderate savings on one of the big items (houses and cars) combined with savings on the smaller items (food, clothes, etc.) can reap a large reward in your total budget. The following are some thought starters:

General Tips

Distinguish between Wants and Needs: You will save a ton of money if you don't mistake wants for needs. Needs are pretty simple to identify--those items that are necessary to sustain: Shelter, food, clothing, transportation. Wants are those things that enhance or possibly improve our family life. A car is a need. Unless necessary for your business, a $40,000 Sport Utility Vehicle is a want, even if a lot of people don't see it that way. Have you ever heard (or said) "I absolutely need...?" when the actual meaning was "I really want?" This is not to suggest that you shouldn't be able to have the things you want--only that to delude yourself into believing that a want is a need--and busting your budget in the process--is a recipe for financial disaster. Is less better? Perhaps it was due to the booming economy, perhaps "keeping up with the Joneses", maybe its ego, but for many of us, we often seem to insist on the biggest and the best, no matter what the cost. When a $15,000 new car may be more than acceptable, we stretch the seams of our budget to afford a $25,000 vehicle. We buy $25 shirts with $35 designer labels attached. We opt for the $100 dinner at the trendy restaurant when a $20 meal would have been just as delicious.

Think about where you are spending the family money--and how--to see if there couldn't be savings found with minor changes in habits.Try before you Buy: This goes a long way in helping to avoid the silly purchases of things you rarely or never use. Before you buy something, especially items with big price tags, borrow one, rent one or try one out before you plunk down the cash. If you are bored with it, or determine that it truly is not something you need before you buy it (and you will be on a certain percentage of items) you will definitely be bored with it, or find it not that necessary, after! Example: You feel that you absolutely must have a new Jet-Ski, at a cost of $4500 (and that is before financing and taxes). You go to the lake, rent one, and 45 minutes into a one hour rental you are saying, "geez, this is a long hour." Saved: More than $4500 (perhaps a year of college fees for the kid!)

How to Earn with AdSense

Google is one of the Internet's largest and most profitable companies, through advertising dollars generated by the billions of searches conducted on its search engine every year. Google shares this revenue with websites that host Google's ads and search function via its AdSense program, which drives additional business to Google. Earning money through AdSense can be a relatively simple process.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderate
Things You’ll Need:
Active website or blog
Google AdSense account

Step1Establish a significant Internet presence. To qualify for Google AdSense, you must have a significant presence on the Internet, be it a website with significant content or a blog with sufficient posts.

Step2Setup a Google AdSense account. Go to Google.com and select "Business Solutions," then "Earn revenue with AdSense," then "How do I get started," and finally "Apply online." This will take you to a simple application. Enter the required information, including your website's URL, the type of account (Individual or Business) that you wish to establish, and personal information to allow Google to make payments.

Step3Agree to the Google AdSense policies. Google strictly enforces a number of policies as part of the AdSense program. Read these carefully before agreeing. If you violate any policies, your Google AdSense account can be suspended or cancelled.
Step4Decide which AdSense capabilities you wish to use. Once your account is established, log back into Google AdSense and select the "AdSense Setup" tab to generate AdSense code. Choose how you will earn revenue, from "AdSense for Content" ads, by placing a Google search box via "AdSense for Search," and/or through AdSense referrals.
Step5Generate AdSense advertisement code. Select the type of AdSense function that you wish to add to your website or blog. Follow through the wizard, by selecting a type of ad or function, creating a general layout that will match the look of your website or blog, and further customizing AdSense. Once you have selected all of the options, Google will generate code that you can place on your site. Repeat if desired.

Step6Drive traffic to your website or blog. The more visitors to your site, the more revenues you will generate through AdSense. Engage in marketing efforts that will drive visitors to your site, and continue to create compelling content to keep traffic coming. Because Google allows the same AdSense account to be used for multiple sites, create new websites and blogs, and place AdSense ads on them as well.

Step7Manage your AdSense revenues. Periodically, log into Google AdSense and select the "Reports" tab. Monitor the amount of revenues that you are receiving, and pay close attention to any specific types of traffic that are generating significant revenues. Modify your sites on an on-going basis to maximize your AdSense dollars.

Top Ten Money Saving Tips

Save Money Tip 1
Spend Less. This is not over simplifying the best way to save money! It is essential if you are serious about being a long term money saver. Review what you spend and look at ways you can save money. Consider making telephone calls for instance only at off-peak times. Do you really need to have newspapers and magazines delivered? Can you do without those coffees you buy at break time everyday - would a flask of coffee taken to work save you money? What about using the public lending library instead of buying books or music CDs? Once you start looking for ways to spend less you will quickly become an expert and really save money.

Save Money Tip 2
Establish a personal budget. This is essential for families and individuals. You will not be able to save money unless you know how much money you have coming in, and how much money you have going out. Once you have prepared a budget of incoming money and outgoing money, you will be able to identify areas where you can save. It is MUCH more difficult to save money over a long period of time (the rest of your life?) without a budget.

Save Money Tip 3
Bulk is good. Think about shopping and buying in bulk. You can also save money by cooking in bulk. This is a real way you can save money with little preparation and almost no extra outlay. Always purchase generics when you can. Prepared foods and convenience foods will always be much more expensive than the generic ingredients needed to make the food. Preparing food in bulk and in advance also gives you the opportunity to plan ahead and be more accurate in your budget. Save Money by buying in bulk whenever you can. One thing to be aware of when buying in bulk is to be sure that any product you buy will get used before it goes bad - you won't save money if you have to throw stuff away. Buying in bulk is not only a good way to save money it is also a good strategy for coping with and surviving emergencies.

Save Money Tip 4
Make sure a sale is a sale. By this I mean do your price research before you commit to making an expensive purchase in a retailers money-off sale. You have to be sure the sale really is a sale and not a creative marketing strategy of the store to encourage you to spend your money without thinking. Once you have researched the true price of a product (any product) you are in a good position to take advantage of a sale, special offer or discount and really save money. "Buy one get one free", "50% off", and "Huge Discount" will only help you save money if the actual price you pay is lower than you would pay somewhere else for exactly the same product.

Save Money Tip 5
Buy used. Sure, we all like to buy new. But there are huge money savings to be made in buying used. Typically cars lose one-third of their value in the first 24 months from new. Why not buy a car 24 months old? Other items such as clothes can be worth even less just the day after new. Look for ways to buy "as good as new" items and save money. Typical products you might consider buying used to save money include: cars, clothes, electrical goods, garden items... tools and sheds, household items... pots and pans, the list of used goods where you can save money is endless.

Save Money Tip 6
Don't carry excessive debt. Some debt in our lives may be essential. We may need a mortgage to purchase a home, we may need to use our credit card to make purchases until pay-day, but your aim to save money should be to have as little debt as possible. Credit Card deb is typically the most expensive debt we may carry. You will be able to save money every month if you make it an absolute rule to pay off your outstanding balance every month. If you can have the discipline to do this you will save money by effectively having no debt, and thus no interest charge on your credit card(s).

Save Money Tip 7
Save Money. No, I mean really save some money. Each week or each month get into the habit of putting an amount, however small into your savings. You could start by saving a very small fixed amount each time and then move to putting in larger amounts once you begin to save money from your other money saving strategies. You will find that by saving money on a regular basis you will quickly build up a store of reserve money and also feel motivated to save more. The hardest part is to take the first step and start saving money - so START TODAY and save some money NOW! If you find it impossible to save money once you have it, consider having money deducted from your paycheck direct each month. This can be a great way to save money rapidly as once it is set up you will not notice it is being collected and your savings will grow with no more effort from you.

Save Money Tip 8
Shop Wisely. Consider markets, superstores, farmer's markets, local shops, marts and stores. Anywhere is worth checking out to see if you can save money. Farmer's Markets can be particularly good places to save money. Typically you are buying direct from the producer of the product so the savings are passed on to you. Use your bulk buying strategy here - farmer's markets often offer opportunities to save money by buying larger quantities of staples, for instance potatoes, rice or corn. Save money and shop wisely.

Save Money Tip 9
Eat in rather than out. This is a huge area where you can save money. A cup of coffee taken out could easily cost you TWENTY times (or more) what it would cost you to make it at home. So think before you drink when you are out. Eating is the same. Fast food restaurants are counting on you eating food that you perhaps don't really need at that time but buy just because it is quick. Why not wait until you get home and have a more nutritious meal and save money at the same time.

Save Money Tip 10
Use less. This money saving tip is a lesson we all need to learn. We live in a consumer society where waste is a huge problem. If we could all use and consume less there would be less waste, less power consumption, and the benefits for you are SAVING MONEY. Consider using less shampoo when you wash your hair, this may not mean washing your hair less effectively it means not flushing the excess shampoo and your money down the drain. What about saving on heating? Turn the thermostat down or put on extra clothes when you are cold. Turn off lights, the TV and the computer when they are not in use. Each little saving you make will build up and enable you to save money. Huge savings in energy can be made which will save you money and be good for our planet and the other people on it.
